Mainstreet Credit Union's Year of Spreading Kindness

Mainstreet Representatives volunteering.

At Mainstreet Credit Union, we believe in the power of kindness. As we celebrated our 70th anniversary this past year, we made it our mission to pay it forward with 70 Acts of Kindness in our community. We joined hands with incredible local organizations, including The KC Pet Project, Donors Choose, Giving the Basics, Advent Health, Harvesters, and the Johnson County Christmas Bureau, to make a positive impact in our community.

Also, in our continuing commitment to supporting education, Mainstreet shows appreciation to the dedicated educators in Olathe throughout the school year. Through our partnership with the Olathe Education Foundation, we strive to make a meaningful difference in the lives of school district employees and teachers alike.

We’d like to express our heartfelt gratitude to all our employees who participated in this initiative. Their acts of kindness, both within and outside the office, have made a real difference in the lives of others. We are proud to have such compassionate individuals as part of our team.

Understanding IRA's

By maximizing contributions to your 401(k) plan (as well as eligible 403(b) 457 plans), you can help build your savings for retirement. In 2024, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) increased the amount you can contribute to your plan and can enjoy tax-deferred growth.

For this year, if you are under 50 years of age, you can contribute up to $23,000. For those over 50 years of age, the catchup limit to your 401(k) remains at $30,500. With traditional IRAs, the 2024 limit will be $7,000 for those under 50 and $8,000 if you are 50+.

Protect Yourself from Romance Scams - Stay Informed!

A person swiping on a dating app.

As we enter the new year, many individuals may be seeking new relationships or friendships online. However, it's crucial to be aware of scammers who use deceptive tactics to steal your time, emotions, and even your money. To help you stay informed and protected, we recommend reading the FTC's Data Spotlight article titled Romance Scammers’ Favorite Lies Exposed, published in February 2023.

This article sheds light on the various methods scammers employ to gain the trust of unsuspecting individuals. By familiarizing yourself with their tactics, you can become better equipped to identify and avoid these scams, safeguarding both your heart and your finances.

If you think that you have been targeted by a Romance or Friend scam:

  1. Act quickly and change the passwords for all your accounts. This will help secure your personal information and prevent further unauthorized access.
  2. Report any suspicious activity to Mainstreet Credit Union. We will gladly review your account activity with you to identify any potential compromises and take appropriate measures to safeguard your finances.
  3. Consider having your computer and/or mobile devices professionally scanned for any malware or viruses.
  4. Contact your credit card company and other financial institutions to inform them about the fraud. This will enable them to monitor your accounts for any unauthorized transactions and take necessary actions to protect your financial well-being.

A photo of Eugene Salmans. It is with great sadness that we share the passing of former Board Member, Eugene (Gene) Salmans. Gene had several careers beginning with the USAF as a Flight Engineer/Loadmaster, both active and reserves, retiring with the rank of Master Sergeant.  Upon retirement from active duty, he went on to earn his bachelor's and master's degrees.  He completed his career at Olathe South High School as a history teacher.  He served on Mainstreet’s Board of Directors from 1972 – 2015 and in his spare time, was a co-owner of a house painting business.
