A First-Time Home Buyer Savings Account helps you save for your first home and get a Kansas state tax break. Tax deductions help your money grow faster (Check with a tax advisor for details). After one year, use the funds for down payments or closing costs.

 Who Qualifies?

You may qualify if you haven’t owned a home or been on a property title in the last three years (including after a divorce).

How do I open and register an account?

Open a Savings or Certificate of Deposit Account at Mainstreet Credit Union. We recommend labelling it First-Time Home Buyer Savings or something that helps you distinguish it from other accounts you may have.

To make it official, report the account on Schedule FHBS when you file your Kansas income taxes.

 What are the account's limits?

You can contribute up to $3,000 per year ($6,000 for couples), with a lifetime max of $24,000 ($48,000 for couples). The account can’t go over $50,000 to stay tax-free. Keep the money in the account for at least one year before using it for home buying costs. If you take money out early or for non-home expenses, you may have to pay taxes or a penalty.

Join Us at the Ballpark: Announcing our Exciting Partnership with the KC Diamonds and Member Events at KC Diamonds Home Games

We’re proud to announce a new partnership with the KC Diamonds, Kansas City’s newest professional women’s sports team! We’re joining forces to empower families, champion women’s sports, and create a positive impact that extends far beyond the ballpark.

As the Official Credit Union of the KC Diamonds, we’re excited to bring our member-first mission to this partnership—supporting the team’s inaugural season and connecting with fans throughout the region. The Diamonds compete in the Professional Softball League at Legends Field, bringing elite athletes and high-energy entertainment to our community.

Look for our presence at every home game—we’ll have fun activities and opportunities for members and fans to connect with us!

Teacher Appreciation: Celebrating Educators with the KC Diamonds

We’re especially excited for our annual Teacher Appreciation Night, we have donated 500 tickets to area schools so teachers and students can experience the fun and celebrate the role they play in our community. As a credit union founded by teachers, this tradition means a lot to us. Plus, we’ll recognize a Teacher of the Game at each home match, giving well-deserved appreciation to those who inspire us every day.

This partnership comes at an exciting time for women’s sports and for Kansas City. It’s a meaningful way for us to bring our members together through community pride, entertainment, and education—while helping build a bright future for women’s professional fastpitch in our region.

Catch the Kansas City Diamonds at Legends Field this season! Follow the team for updates, schedules, and special credit union activities.

Safety Net: Protect What Matters Most as We Grow Older

Elder financial abuse is more common than many people realize, and it’s often happening quietly.

Across the country, financial institutions have reported over 180,000 suspicious cases involving older adults, totaling more than $6 billion in potential or actual losses.*

What makes this even more concerning is how these situations unfold. Many cases don’t happen all at once. They build over time, sometimes over months, before being detected. In many cases, the person responsible is someone the victim knows and trusts.

That’s why one simple idea can make such a difference:

Pause. Ask. Protect.

Pause
If something feels urgent or unusual, take a moment. Pressure is one of the most common tactics used in financial exploitation.

Ask
If something feels off, talk it through with someone you trust or your credit union. A quick conversation can prevent a costly mistake.

Protect
Never share personal or financial information unless you’re completely confident it’s safe.

At Mainstreet, we believe in protecting your financial well-being. It means helping you feel confident in every financial decision you make.

If something doesn’t feel right, trust that instinct and reach out. We’re here to help you protect what matters most.

Donate School Supplies for Local Students in Need

We invite you to contribute new school supplies for local students in need. Until July 31st, bins will be stationed in the lobby of each of our branches to gather vital back-to-school supplies. This initiative is designed to ensure that every student is adequately equipped and ready to learn at the start of the school year. By providing essential supplies, we help students start their year off right.

The success of this drive hinges on the goodwill of community members like you! Acquiring the necessary supplies can be a financial burden, as the average family is projected to spend around $670 this year on educational materials and clothing. Your contributions will make a significant difference in the lives of students in our community!

Needed Supplies:

  • Backpacks
  • Notebooks and Binders
  • Pencils, Pens, and Markers ✏️
  • Calculators ➕
  • Lunchboxes

Need some ideas? Please follow this link for generic back-to-school supply lists or check out your district's website for more detailed lists!
