About Us

At Mainstreet Credit Union, your story matters. We’re here to support your financial journey with guidance, encouragement, and practical tools—every step of the way.

Mainstreet Credit Union is a not-for-profit financial cooperative, wholly owned and operated by its members. That means our focus isn’t on outside shareholders or profit margins. Instead, earnings are returned to our members through competitive loan rates, higher dividends on deposits, and lower fees—so your money works harder for you.

Rooted in Service. Built for People.

Our story began in 1953, when we were chartered as the Northeast Johnson County Teachers’ Credit Union. Back then, a small group of passionate educators came together with a simple goal: help fellow teachers manage their finances with confidence and care. The credit union operated out of a classroom in the Shawnee Mission School District before moving in 1962 to a small rented office, staffed by one manager and two part-time employees.

As membership grew, so did our reach. Through steady growth and thoughtful mergers with smaller credit unions, we expanded our ability to serve more people across the region. In 1979, our charter was broadened to include anyone living or working in Johnson County, Kansas, and our name evolved to The Credit Union of Johnson County to reflect that broader community.

Growing with Our Communities

In 2008, our charter expanded again to include the entire Kansas City metro area. Continued growth, fueled by additional mergers, brought new branch locations in Lawrence, Leavenworth, and Kansas City, Missouri. To reflect our expanding footprint beyond Johnson County, we became Mainstreet Credit Union in February 2010. That same year, two additional mergers added branches in Kansas City, Kansas, and Bonner Springs.

Today, more than 61,000 members from a wide range of companies, professions, agencies, and neighborhoods trust Mainstreet Credit Union for their financial needs.

A Commitment That Goes Beyond Banking

Mainstreet Credit Union is proud to be an active community partner. We support local schools, school foundations, chambers of commerce, hospitals, and nonprofit organizations throughout the Kansas City metro area, because strong communities and strong financial lives go hand in hand.
