Learn About Us
At Mainstreet Credit Union, your story matters. We’re here to support your financial journey with guidance, encouragement, and practical tools — every step of the way.
Our Story
Mainstreet Credit Union is a not-for-profit financial cooperative, wholly owned and operated by its members. Guided by the belief that banking should feel personal and create a sense of belonging, Mainstreet offers inclusive, people-first financial guidance with personalized coaching, fair lending decisions and tools that drive meaningful progress. Members also benefit from competitive loan rates, higher dividends on deposits, and lower fees - options that help them move forward with confidence.
Rooted in Service. Built for People.
Our story began in 1953, when we were chartered as the Northeast Johnson County Teachers’ Credit Union. Back then, a small group of passionate educators came together with a simple goal: help fellow teachers manage their finances with confidence and care. The credit union operated out of a classroom in the Shawnee Mission School District before moving in 1962 to a small, rented office staffed by one manager and two part-time employees.
As membership grew, so did our reach. Through steady growth and thoughtful mergers with smaller credit unions, we expanded our ability to serve more people across the region. In 1979, our charter was broadened to include anyone living or working in Johnson County, Kansas, and our name evolved to The Credit Union of Johnson County to reflect that broader community.
Growing with Our Communities
In 2008, our charter expanded again to include the entire Kansas City metro area. Continued growth, fueled by additional mergers, brought new branch locations in Lawrence, Leavenworth, and Kansas City, Missouri. To reflect our expanding footprint beyond Johnson County, we became Mainstreet Credit Union in February 2010. That same year, two additional mergers added branches in Kansas City, Kansas, and Bonner Springs.
Today, more than 55,000 members from a wide range of companies, professions, agencies, and neighborhoods trust Mainstreet Credit Union for their financial needs.
A Commitment That Goes Beyond Banking
Mainstreet Credit Union is proud to be an active community partner. We support local schools, school foundations, chambers of commerce, hospitals, and nonprofit organizations throughout the Kansas City, MO/KS area, because strong communities and strong financial lives go hand in hand.

Helpful Details
You may schedule payments 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Payments scheduled on a Saturday, Sunday, or holiday will be debited from the account the next business day.
The Bill Payer processor processes payments on all days excluding Sundays and Federal Reserve Board recognized holidays. In cases where a payment gets scheduled on a Sunday (this can potentially happen on a recurring payment), the payment is processed on the day before (Saturday). If you happen to be setting up the payment on this particular Saturday, the bill payment will be processed on the next banking business day. Also, please note that weekly recurring payments may not be scheduled on Saturdays.

To ensure you receive future emails, please make sure we have your preferred email on file. Simply log in to OnlineAccess to update your email address.
If you are having trouble receiving our emails or finding them in your spam folder, you may need to whitelist us. Whitelisting an email address just means you add them to your approved senders list. Doing this protects against overzealous spam filters.
Whitelisting is a quick task to ensure the sender of an email gets added to the recipient’s safe senders list.
Here are simple instructions on how to ensure that our email lands in your inbox every time:
Gmail
Yahoo
AOL
Apple
Android
Gmail
Getting all future emails from a sender to appear in the “Primary” tab (instead of “Promotions”) is a quick, two-step process.
First of all, drag-and-drop the email message from beneath the tab it’s currently filed under, to the “Primary” tab:

Once done, an alert will appear with, “This conversation has been moved to Primary. Do this for all future messages from [email protected]?” Select “Yes”:

Yahoo
When opening an email message, a “+” symbol should display next to From: and the sender’s name. Select this and an “Add to contacts” pop-up should appear. Select “Save”:
AOL
In the preview pane for an opened email message in AOL Mail, select the sender’s From name under the email’s subject line and select “Add Contact” from the drop-down menu:

Apple Mail
By selecting the From, or Reply-to on an email message, you can choose to “Add to Contacts” or “Add to VIPs.”

Android
On Android devices, open the email message and touch the picture of the sender that displays before the message. Tap “Add to Contacts.”

Conventional - There is a 3 percent down payment requirement.
Zero Down - No down payment required for first-time home buyers. A 1% minimum borrower contribution is required, which can be part of closing costs or required cash reserves.
Mortgages with less than a 20 percent down payment require Private Mortgage Insurance to protect the lender against default. When considering the size of your down payment, consider that you'll also need money for closing costs, moving expenses and possibly repairs, decorating or appliances. Call us at 913-599-1010 to learn more about down payment requirements.
Retaining servicing means that Mainstreet will take care of your loan after closing. We receive and post your payments and pay taxes, homeowners insurance and mortgage insurance out of your escrow account (if you have an account set up for this purpose). We also perform annual escrow analysis, issue payoff requests (we don't charge any payoff statement fee or fax fee for this service) and perform collection activity if that becomes necessary. Retaining servicing is very important to us because it allows us to take care of our members after closing and do other nice things for you, such as paying dividends on your escrow account!
